Nuts play a very important part in every bolt and nut connection and depending on their application and the load applied on them are manufactured with different sizes and standards. Choosing the right nut can avoid connection failure and is just as important as choosing the right bolt as opposed to what many technicians believes.
In heavy industries, nuts are used to assemble hex bolts, Socket cap screws and stud bolts. Hex nut standard DIN 934 is the most common nut used along with hex bolts DIN 933 fully threaded, hex bolt DIN 931 partially threaded and socket cap screws DIN 912.
The nuts that are used for heavier duties and the ones used with stud bolts are heavier and thicker and usually are manufactured based on ASTM A194 standard.
The coating and material of nuts usually follow the ones of the bolt. These mean hot deep galvanized nuts are used with hot deep galvanized bolts, and so is correct about plain and Dacromet finishing. The class or grade of the nut also, should be the same as the bolt or even one step above as opposed to what many engineers assume. Therefore, to be attached to hex bolt class 8.8, nut class of 8 or above should be used.
Ajax Bolt Co. manufactures Metric Nuts DIN 934 with different sizes varying from 5 to 36 mm. these nuts are manufactures to be used with hex bolts fully or partially threaded following standards DIN 933 and 931. Depending on your required strength, the nuts are manufactured with different classes 5.6, 8.8, 10.9 and 12.9 as defined internationally. These products are also delivered with different finishing plain, cold-galvanized, hot-deep-galvanized, Dacromet, …
The standard weight and size of Metric Nuts are mentioned in the table below.

ASTM A194 covers steel, Alloy steel and stainless steel heavy hex nuts for high duties and under higher pressure and temperature. There are different grades of A194 nuts available however Grade 2h is the most common one. Below we have described the material and heating process for these grades.
Hex nut material and heating process | ASTM A194 Nut Grade |
---|---|
Heavy Carbon steel Nut | 2 |
Quenched and tempered Heavy Carbon steel Nut | 2H |
100% hardness tested, Quenched and tempered Heavy Carbon steel Nut | 2HM |
Quenched and tempered carbon molybdenum heavy hex nuts | 4 |
Quenched and tempered alloy steel heavy hex nuts | 7 |
100% hardness tested, Quenched and tempered Heavy alloy steel Nut | 7M |
Charpy impact tested, Quenched and tempered alloy steel heavy hex nuts | 7L |
Stainless steel hex nut Grade 304 | 8 |
Stainless steel hex nut Grade 316 | 8M |
